The Critical Need for Blood
![]() |
One out of three people need donated blood in their lifetime and one out of four hospital patients need a blood transfusion. Blood is an every day need. The national blood supply must cover every day needs and unexpected disasters. Volunteer blood donors are needed year-round to ensure there is enough blood on the shelves whenever and wherever it is needed. Donated blood has saved countless lives and is continually helping to improve the quality of human life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer. |
Every day, no matter how sensational the emergency or how commonplace the surgery, it's the blood on the shelves that saves lives.
Throughout the 1990's the need for blood has increased to support lifesaving medical procedures. Simultaneously, the frequency of blood shortages nationwide has also increased. Approximately 38,000 units of blood are used in the U.S. daily and the demand is increasing. Currently, while approximately 60 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood only 5 percent donate on a regular basis. What will it take to help the public understand and act on this very simple concept? That's the challenge faced by blood centers across the country, and it shapes the twofold mission of the Foundation for America's Blood Centers: to reach the majority of eligible blood donors to meet current needs, and to educate and recruit young people in order to build a new generation of blood donors for the future.

Formed in 1997, the Foundation supports national and community programs through America's Blood Centers (ABC), a national network of community blood centers which has been addressing the issue of volunteer blood donation and providing the nation with a safe and adequate blood supply for 40 years. |
The Foundation provides program support for numerous national education and awareness programs to address the critical need for a safe and continuous blood supply. The scope of fundable programs spans education, technology, and research or studies whose outcomes have the potential for increasing donations. These programs address an issue of national critical concern – declining blood donations and frequent blood supply shortages.
